The Maya-Maya International Airport in Brazzaville, tested Wednesday, March 23, 2022 its aerodrome emergency plan simulating a security and safety crisis.
The scenario of this general exercise of the emergency plan of the airport of Brazzaville, staged an aircraft crash of the imaginary company Air Mayombe from Pointe-Noire with 90 passengers and 10 crew members on board.
On landing, the main gear did not extend, the aircraft crashed and broke up on the runway strip with a generalized fire. The intervention of the airport’s rescue teams allowed the fire to be contained and the occupants of the aircraft to be rescued, among whom were 21 dead, 25 seriously injured, 10 slightly injured and 44 uninjured.
This exercise, managed by the Exercise Steering Committee, allowed the evaluation of the documentary and operational system as well as the coordination mechanism of AERCO, manager of the Maya-Maya International Airport in Brazzaville, in a crisis situation.
As part of the continuous improvement of the Brazzaville airport contingency plan, a final report of the exercise will be prepared by the stakeholders to inform the authorities and partners.
The development of an aerodrome emergency plan and its deployment in real or simulated situations is a national and international aeronautical regulatory requirement for any certified international airport.
The objective is to limit the effects of an emergency situation as much as possible by saving human lives, protecting aircraft and infrastructure in order to maintain flight operations.
With the upcoming certification of the Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire airports, AERCO’s ambition is to “become the reference airport group in Central Africa by uniting all airport stakeholders through the professionalism of our teams, the quality of our infrastructure and their compliance with international standards.
The Congolese RUMBA is now listed as an intangible heritage site by UNESCO. The French Institute in Congo in Pointe-Noire has the honor and pleasure to offer you the festival “RUMBA one day, RUMBA always”, sponsored by AERCO, which will take place in Pointe-Noire from Tuesday 05 to Saturday 16 April 2022.
Will be present great personalities of the Kongo Space who have shaped the Congolese RUMBA or transcribed its history – Sam MANGWANA, Théo Blaise KOUNKOU, Clément OSSINONDE and Maika MUNAN. It is also an opportunity to bring together two generations and thus cause a passing of the torch to invent the RUMBA of tomorrow (Freddy MASSAMBA, Balou CANTA, Kevin MBOUANDE) under the leadership of the members of the Scientific Committee of the Congolese RUMBA, such as Professors YOKA LIYE MUDABA and Charles BOUETOUM-KIYINDOU. Professor Théophile OBENGA and Mrs. Ida NGAMPOLO will bring their views on the history of the Bantu of the capital. This support is part of an action for cultural development which is part of AERCO’s CSR approach.
As security is a major issue at airports and in particular the adhesion of airstrips, AERCO carried out from 26th February to 10th March 2022 slip control and degumming work on the runways of Maya-Maya airport in Brazzaville and Antonio Agostinho NETO airport in Pointe-Noire.
Degumming is an aeronautical pavement maintenance operation that consists of removing the gum left by aircraft on landing. Thanks to a very specialized equipment from Europe, the hydro projection treatment has therefore made it possible to remove the gum deposits and ensure a roughness in accordance with the standards in force.
In order not to disrupt the activity, the degumming on both airports took place at night.
Maintenance began and ended with the measurement of the CFL (Coefficient of Longitudinal Friction) in order to measure adhesion before and after degumming.
These very expensive maintenance operations carried out every two or three years are part of the ICAO certification of both airports.
For several years, AERCO has opted for a Management by Objectives system in order to guarantee the company’s performance and to allow employees to progress. With this in mind, the HR Department organized, from February 16 to 25, awareness-raising sessions on the sidelines of the objective-setting campaign on the platforms of Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire to prepare its employees for annual interviews.
On hold since 2019, the annual interviews have resumed in 2022 and will take place on average twice a year. The first interview will consist of setting objectives and the second, at the end of the year, of reviewing achievements. It is important to remember that setting objectives is beneficial to both the company and the employees.
In order to show their support for the vaccination campaign against COVID-19 launched by the Government since March 25, 2021, AERCO in collaboration with CONGO HANDLING carried out a vaccination campaign for personnel at Maya-Maya (Brazzaville) and Agostino airports Neto (Pointe Noire).
To this end, from Monday 22 to Wednesday 24 November 2021, thanks to the vaccination antennas installed simultaneously at the two aforementioned airports, more than 200 people from the airport community wishing voluntarily to be vaccinated against COVID-19 have been vaccinated. The vaccines available were the following: SINOPHARM, JANSSEN, SPUTNIK V.
As the airport sector is particularly exposed and in view of the worrying evolution of the epidemiological situation in the country, this encouraging initiative was of particular interest.
While thanking the health services that made themselves available for this operation, AERCO and CONGO HANDLING once again remind everyone that it is important to continue to respect barrier gestures. It is by acting together responsibly that we can combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
To date, just over 45% of AERCO’s workforce has been vaccinated.

Aware of the importance of sustainable development in relation to airport activities, AERCO’s management is committed to protect the environment, meeting our regulatory obligations in this area and improving our environmental performance. This commitment is reflected in our environmental policy.
